DescriptionOpenGL and Microsoft DirectX development environments use this type of format. This type of format is used to save bitmap images of user interface environs and textures. Here one can keep compressed or uncompressed data. It is mainly used for developing 3D applications and games. Currently, game consoles are made based on this DDS format. This format has the ability to squeeze texture boxes "on the fly," which causes performance improvement while running the application.
Technical detailsThe DDS format was published along with the DirectX7.0 and DirectX8.0. Though it has an old connection with the DirectX series, it can be used with GLSL (OpenGL Shading Language) ARB finish squeezing extensions. Direct 3D ten increased DDS files' capacity by increasing its textures and the additional support needed to run with Direct3D 10.x and 11 texture formats.
