To compress an image, it is divided into blocks and predictions are made based on the surrounding blocks' pixels. The difference between the original image and the prediction is then encoded. The prediction is accurate enough to result in no noticeable difference from the original image, effectively reducing the file size. Conversely, lossless compression involves using previously examined parts of the image to reconstruct the remainder of the picture. |
